Today is Black Friday which is the unofficial (official?) start of the Holiday Shopping Season, a time of year I like to refer to as
“Shiny Object Season”
As you go about trying to find that perfect gift for someone, remember this,
it is the job of the retail industry to get you to buy as much as you can, regardless of whether of not you can afford it.
Knowing this, you can put stops in place to not fall into the trap of overspending.
Have a Plan and FOLLOW IT.
You need to make a list of the people you are buying for and a few gift ideas for each person. Remembering that gift buying isn’t a competition, it’s the thought that counts.
If your plan is to cash-flow Christmas, then do it!
If your plan is to not “go overboard” then do it!
Remember to say, “It’s not in the budget” and that “No” is a complete sentence.
You do not have to buy all the things for all the people.
A Budget aka “Cash-Flow Christmas”
You need to have a dollar amount in mind for total gift buying and break it down into cost per person. For example, let’s say you have a $500 budget:
$100 – Charity/Donations
$100 – Family
$100 – Friends
$100 – Co-workers/Holiday party hosts
$100 – Other – Mail/Trash/Hairdresser/Teachers/Doctors/etc.
Now, take each category of $100 and break it down per person –
$20 per person?
$10 per person?
$5 per person?
Or, any combination of that?
It’s important to plan out a budget AND keep track of spending as you go along.
Keep all the receipts!
Note: This is just an example, your budget will be more or less depending on your financial situation.
In preparation, you have to ask yourself the “WHY” for gift buying:
Are you buying out of obligation or appreciation?
Are you buying for need or want?
Asking these questions will help you stick to your plan!
*Make a list BEFORE shopping online. Don’t “wander around” a website.
*Use the cash-envelope system before going into a store.
*Also, if you shop online, make sure you sign up for Ebates first and earn cash back with each purchase! I’ve been an Ebates member for years and have earned over $250 cash back! It’s FREE to be an Ebates member, sign up HERE!
What we do –
*Our boys each get four things: something they want, something they need, something to do and something to read. They do make us a list but it is limited to FIVE things and we use the phrase, “Santa knows best”. (yes, they still believe in Santa!!!)
*My husband and I each make a list of things and we buy from the list. That way, there is no guessing and we are still surprised by our gifts!
*I usually buy gift cards for the teachers and have the boys make a homemade card for each teacher.
*We do the gift exchange game with our families – you know the one where each person brings a gift within a dollar amount limit and we draw numbers then have the “stealing” part! It’s always fun!
We started saving for the Christmas Fund in June.
I buy local as much as possible! #entrepreneurlife
