Most conversations I have with people start with,
“How do you…”
People want to know how I get the results they see me achieve.
Such was the case when I scheduled a call with someone this week. Usually, for a 30 minute call, I have no “head up” as to what the conversation will be about. There is no pre-work for a 30 minute phone call. It’s a discovery call with some problem solving involved – in 30 minutes.
It’s one of my favorite ways of coaching.
Our conversation started with this question, “How do you overcome a negative mindset”
I replied, “Give me an example of what you are dealing with”
Situation: I look at what other people have, I compare their life to my life and I think to myself, ‘why can’t I have that life, too?’
My immediate response what this –
You absolutely deserve to have whatever it is that you want. Oh, but wait. There is a difference between making your life better and coveting – you are not coveting, you are saying to yourself, I want “X” and I’m willing to do the work to get there.
You see, there is a fine line between keeping up with the Jones’ and wanting to improve your life by following the path that fulfills your purpose.
In this situation, the person with whom I was speaking wanted a drastic life change. She felt a little stuck in her current situation and felt like there was more that she wanted to do – that she is being called to do more. The first thing I told her was that she had to believe she deserved this new life for herself.
Then, we strategized a plan of action to get her started on moving forward.
We ended by talking about the faith we have in following God’s plan for us – we are to do what we feel we are called to do. I told her, I know there’s a Bible verse somewhere about it, I just can’t think of it at the moment. It is this:
“I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future”
Three takeaways from our conversation:
If something works for someone else, it can work for you.
Stop comparing yourself to others – we all have our own lives with our own struggles and successes.
Wishing and hoping is not a plan, you have to do the work.
How do I overcome negative mindset?
How to I set goals and achieve them?
How did I become debt free and stay debt free?
For me, it all comes down to this – my focus and my centering – this quote that I have hanging on the wall, I see it and read it everyday:
Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
So, go move mountains. I know you can do it, I know you deserve the life you want.
How do I know? Faith and experience
It all starts with believing in yourself as much as I believe in you, which, if you didn’t know is A LOT!
