About mid-January, I inquired about a post written by my friend Rhonda regarding online tutoring.
We hopped on the phone and she explained all the details about the different companies where she works as a tutor. The one I was most interested in was Cambly.
I’ll be honest, it sounded almost too good to be true.
– I didn’t have to pay any money.
– I didn’t have to buy anything
– I get paid every Monday
Even though I’ve known Rhonda for many years and I trust she wouldn’t get me involved in a scam, I had to know for myself if this was legit. Cambly is a company where English speaking tutors work with students from around the world to learn English.
Here was my thought process: I can spend 5-10 hours a week speaking to people to help them learn English. EASY!
I applied to be a tutor and was accepted.
I chose to work with people who wanted conversational English.
I signed up for Priority Hours ( more on that later )
In about two weeks, I made $43.52! Here’s the actual breakdown from my call history:
total talk time (minutes)
So, yes, I get paid about $.18 a minute which is about $10 an hour. Once I accumulate $20, I receive that payment. I received payment via Paypal today (1/29/18) and I have had the most FUN!
2/7/18 update: This week I received another payment of $44.71 AND received my first $20 referral bonus which I will have added to next Monday’s pay!
Here’s how it works.
If you get accepted as a tutor, you sign up for Priority Hours. These are hours you set aside to be available when a tutoring call comes in. When the call comes in, you answer it and see who is on the other side – the calls are done through video chat on the Cambly website.
I have spoken to both males and females of all ages from places like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Korea, United Arab Emirates and Brazil! Most of the calls are the five minute trials the students can do so I have learned to break it down – one minute intro, 3 minutes of conversation and one minute wrap up with reminder for them to purchase minutes to continue. Some other conversations have been 15 or 30 minutes for those students who purchased minutes.
What do we talk about?
The same things you and I talk about – the weather, our families and our jobs. I always ask why they want to learn English and for them to tell me something about their country. One student and I had an entire conversation about football! Another student and I talked about our favorite foods. As the tutor, I make corrections for them with pronunciation and grammar as we go along. There is also a chat bar where I can type a sentence and it translates into their language. Or, they can type something in their language and it translates to English.
As much or as little as you want! That’s one of the things I love about this company. I can schedule Priority Hours or schedule a time slot (once I start getting some regular clients) and work or not work. The schedule is totally up to me and there are a variety of hours to choose from – everything from early morning to late night! I usually work 1-3 hours a day. If I work a three hour day, I schedule every other hour to take calls. Then, I sit at my desk – which I do anyway – work on some tasks that I don’t mind if I get interrupted and take the calls as they come in. For example, I am on a call hour with Cambly while I am writing this page of information. I have taken one call for five minutes in the last 22 minutes. I may or may not get another call and I only get paid for the calls I take. So, I may have to set up two hours of being available to take calls to get paid for one hour. But, in the meantime, I am getting other things done like: writing blog posts, creating Facebook posts, posting on Instagram, answering email, cleaning off the top of my desk, filing, etc. Basic admin tasks that need to be done and I don’t mind if I get interrupted.
Regardless, even just five hours of talk time will pay me $50! $50 x 4 weeks=$200 a month.
The paycheck I received today averaged $20 a week. Even at that, that’s $80 extra per month.
I have only been using this program for two weeks and yes, I LOVE it! I get paid to talk to people and I find it exciting and fascinating! I applied, signed up for hours, answered calls and got paid – just like my friend Rhonda told me it would happen! However, understand that people do take advantage of the five minute free trial. I have had a few calls where there was a group of people and they were just laughing and joking among themselves and no one answered me when I said Hello. ( think of it like prank calls, almost). I have gotten a few five minute calls where the student did not know any English so that made it difficult.
I look at it like this – because I’ve always said it – we are blessed to be a blessing! This is an additional income stream that at minimum would add $200 a month to our bottom line. Even if it was half that, it’s still extra money. And, I’m not really adding another “workload” – I’m already sitting at my desk working and then just taking calls as they come in. I literally am just talking to people and offering feedback.
