In February of 1999, I attended my 9th Elton John concert. This time, I would travel to Roanoke, VA. This particular tour was the first of many Solo shows when it was only Elton and the piano. While I do have a great appreciation for the band, it was my chance to see my two favorite things –
Elton and the piano.
By this point in my journey, I already knew how to find out Elton’s tour schedule, get tickets and get my friends to come with me. I was at the point where I always bought two tickets to every show and then just started asking people to go with me. You would think it might be easy to get someone to go to a FREE concert, but it’s not, really. Turns out, not everyone was as excited to go see Elton John as I was – which, to this day; I still have a hard time understanding.
Lucky for me, my cousin Jenny lived close to Roanoke and she accepted the offer to go with me to the show! If I remember correctly, this is the first time I had a seat on the FLOOR which is an outstanding place to be because its closer to the stage. Little did I know at the time that if you sit in the 2nd section of the floor, you can’t get anywhere near the stage – more on that in a later adventure.
This seat, however, would turn out to be a particularly important one as it gave me access to meet someone who would have a great impact on chasing my dream.
As we were standing near our seats, I scanned down toward the stage and saw her standing there. Then I remembered I had seen her before, many times before. Like, at all the other shows I attended. She was always in the front row, near the stage. I had to meet her. So, I told my cousin I would be right back and took off walking towards her. The usher in between sections stopped me and asked to see my ticket. However, since my ticket did nt give me access to that section, I couldn’t get into that section – even if it was just for a few minutes!
Stupid ticket rules! Thinking on my feet, I asked the usher,
“You see that girl standing by the stage who sort of looks like me but her hair is a little longer and she’s a bit taller?”
“Yes”, she replied
“Can you go get her for me? I need to talk to her”
To my surprise, the usher complied and walked down the aisle to to get her. When she turned and looked at me, I just started waving at her like we were long lost friends.
Then, to my surprise, she started walking towards me and I met Valerie. This meeting would prove to be an important part of chasing my dream.
Little did I know at the time of our meeting and as our friendship grew, the number of times I would say to her, “HOW do you know all of this information?” Yes, indeed, how does it feel to be so wise?
