Pursuing a dream is hard work. It’s not just enough to have a dream, to say “one day I will…”. You actually have to create a plan and put actionable steps in place to make your dream come true!
Sometimes, it takes a lot of time, too. It took us just about four years to pay off our debt. I’ve been pursuing my dream to meet Elton John for over twenty years. And yes, it has all been worth it. Being debt free means I have money to pursue my “meeting Elton John” dream and, so far, the closest I have come to meeting Elton has been sitting at his piano!
When was the last time you read MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech? What is your dream? Let’s focus on five quotes from that infamous speech:
“I have a dream…”
Let’s start here. Complete this sentence: I have a dream _________________________.
Don’t spend too long deliberating over it. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you had nothing to stop you, all the resources you need and the know-how to make it happen, what is your dream? Got it? Good. Write it down. Make it real.
“We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.”
I believe that everyone has opportunity to pursue their dreams. Yes, sometime you have to create the opportunity but most importantly, you have to be ready to take advantage of an opportunity. How do you make sure you are ready? By listing the obstacles that might stand in your way and then creating a plan to overcome those obstacles.
“… as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.”
Do you know what happens when you pursue your dream? You inspire others to do the same. I can’t tell you the number of people who have told me, “I am so inspired to become debt free since you became debt free!” Whatever your dream is, there are others out there who want the same thing. They are just waiting for someone else to show them the way.
“Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.”
If pursing a dream were easy, everyone would do it. What difficulties do you have in pursuing your dream? Do not despair. Someone, somewhere knows how to help you. You can start by making a list of the things that stand in your way and then creating actions to overcome those things.
“With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.”
Whether you believe in God or a High Power, faith has a great role in pursuing a dream. First, you have to believe that you can achieve this goal. Second, prayers work! Faith helps us to not give up, not to despair and to have hope that one day our dream will come true.
Find a quote or a picture that encourages you to pursue your dream.
Put it where you can see it everyday.
This is a photo of Elton John giving me his autograph! I have it in this frame with the quote from Tom Clancy. It’s hanging in the hallway of our home where I walk by it everyday. This is my constant reminder that nothing will stand in the way of me pursuing and achieving my dream!
