I’ve really enjoyed seeing all the back to school pictures scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed this morning.
Back to School means back to routines and there is no better time than this to get back into a financial routine as well.
I know that many budgets were blown over summer break, laziness in keeping track of spending occurred and some people are realizing their savings accounts have drastically dwindled.
September 1st is just a few days away and NOW is the time to get ready to re-focus.
1. Review your Budget
You should have a two week or monthly budget as well as a short term and long term budget. Take a look at your spending over the last 30 days. What is going well? What needs improvement? Make adjustments now for your September budget.
2. Make a Plan
Did back to school expenses “sneak up” on you again this year?
Make a list of your expenses. This is easy if you keep receipts but if you don’t, get a dollar amount together. How much did you spend on supplies, clothes, etc? Write it down, divide by 11 and start saving in September.
Speaking of saving, do you have a plan for Christmas? You only have four months until Christmas!!!!
Create your budget for September – don’t forget about seasonal things that increase of decrease. For example, if you drive the kids to school every day, the gas budget will need to increase.
3. Quarterly Goals
The fourth and last quarter fo the year starts October 1st. Re-visit those goals you set back in January. How are you doing on accomplishing them? If you haven’t made nay progress – don’t despair! Create a plan and get started so you have momentum going into 2017. If you are close to accomplishing your goal, what are the things you need to do in the last quarter to accomplish them? If you have already reached your goals or you will reach them sooner than the quarter ends, then work on 2017 goals. Again, get the momentum going.
Do you need help getting re-started and re-focused? I have several options for you:
