This is one of my favorite memes from 2016.
Believing that you deserve a better financial life than the one you have now is the first step to getting there! You do deserve it. Yes, you do!
But, YOU are the only one who can change things. You can’t wait around for something better to happen, you have to pursue it. You need a better plan, you need better goals and you need to believe that you can create the life you want, not the life that is the “status quo”.
One of the biggest issues I see with my clients is that they don’t even know where to begin. I get that. I was there once, too. So overwhelmed with the crushing mess of the finances that there doesn’t seem to be a clear starting point.
That’s why you need a step by step process:
1. Gather Supplies
You will need pencils, erasers, a notebook, a timer, a calculator and your bank statement from the last 30 days.
2. Write it Down
Find a quiet, distraction-free space. Take your pencil and your notebook and write out your ideal financial situation. What does that look like for you? Don’t let your current financial situation dictate your ideal situation. This is the part where we dream big and create a new reality.
Then, you are going to need to evaluate your current financial situation. This is where you add in the calculator, erasers, and your bank statement. Write down your income and your outgo. Be as detailed as you can be given the information you have gathered.
The analogy to this is dumping puzzle pieces out of the puzzle box – you can’t put the puzzle together unless you see all the pieces.
Need some prompts for writing things down?
1. What is going well with your finances?
2. What is your biggest frustration with your finances?
3. What are your goals?
Helpful Tip: Set a timer for 15 minutes.
3. Find Your People
The hardest part of thinking BIG and creating new goals and plans is that people are resistant to change. You want to change, but the people around you might not want to. That makes it hard because, often, it becomes too difficult to make the necessary changes without support.
