FOMO: Fear of Missing Out
Fear is a strong-willed emotion. It can control your decision making process unlike anything else.
Most decisions made out of fear are not well-thought decisions, they are reaction decisions.
When you add in FOMO, it might make a decision worse.
It’s not a good thing to make a decision based on an emotion.
This time of year, marketers bank on the fact that you will become emotional about “all the things to buy” – they want to make sure you feel like you are not missing out on the latest trend, toy, gadget or other related items.
Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are now over.
Do you feel like you missed out on something?
In 2007, I had major FOMO. I couldn’t go to Elton John’s 60th Birthday concert at Madison Square Garden because I didn’t have the money to go. Additionally, it was his 60th concert at MSG which made this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I missed out.
But something good came from that experience. I made the decision to get better with money so I would never miss another opportunity to see Elton John in concert. It took me a few years to figure out how to do that but I did it – money no longer stands in the way of me taking advantage of an opportunity.
I have since redeemed that concert I missed out on – first by attending the NYE concert at The Barclay’s in Brooklyn, NY where I also bought a backstage tour pass and had the opportunity to sit at Elton’s piano!
In 2017, I traveled to Vegas and had the opportunity to be on stage, next to Elton’s piano BOTH nights – the second night I got close enough to shake his hand!
Last month, was my full circle moment. My 39th and 40th Elton John concerts at Madison Square Garden! What a trip that was – two concerts and seeing The Lion King on Broadway!
This Friday, I’m traveling to Atlanta, GA for my 41st and 42nd Elton John concert. Flight, hotel, concert ticket, meals, etc. all paid for in cash. #debtfreelife
On December 31st, 2009 I had FOMO again but this was different – I was fearful of spending the money to purchase the at-home study kit of Financial Peace University. I was fearful because we were living paycheck to paycheck at the time and we didn’t have the money to spend – or, so I thought.
But I knew something had to change, that I had to take drastic measures to make drastic changes.
I had to take the leap of faith and I had to do the work to make the program work.
I know now that I made an investment in my financial future – not just mine, though.
The financial future of my husband and our boys was at stake, too. There was a lot riding on this one decision that ultimately changed my life. And now, changes the lives of everyone who hears my story.
I don’t know about you, but my inbox and social media feeds were slammed full of special deals and offers over the last few days. It was overwhelming and eventually, I quit looking at all the offers.
It’s 8pm on the evening of Cyber Monday and I have FOMO right now:
What super great awesome deal did I miss? How much money would I have saved?
What’s the latest, greatest deal on the latest, greatest something that I missed? *sigh*
None of that matters now. Whatever I missed out on is going to have to be gone –
whatever it was that I missed, I probably didn’t need anyway. #minimalism
However, the same doesn’t have to be true for you –
Did you see the coaching special I had offered? I wanted to be sure you didn’t miss out –
I won’t offer this type of special again.
Yes, I have payment options because it’s important to me to help you if you are ready to make the changes necessary but don’t happen to have the full fee saved up. I get that. I also understand that it’s the end of the month, in between Holidays and budgets are tight.
This is a huge leap of faith – just like the one I took. The difference is that this leap, for you, is personalized coaching based on your specific situation. I don’t tell you what to do with your money, but rather, help you understand all the options that are available to you and you decide what works for you.
We work together to create a plan that works for you and your situation.
If you are sick and tired of being stressed, worried and anxious about your finances…
If you have a BIG financial goal and you aren’t sure how to make it happen….
If you are drowning in debt, overwhelmed and just do not know where to begin…
Now is your time to take that leap.
Now is the time to stop letting fear of missing out control your life and instead, create the option to take advantage of opportunities.
