Happy New Year!
Wait – wasn’t that just like six months ago?
Well, it was – and then just about three and a half months in we all shut down due to the Coronavirus. Jobs lost, schools closed, social lives gone.
Maybe, perhaps, even dreams lost, learning stopped and we lost ourselves a little in the process?
If that’s you – TODAY is your New Year’s Day.
Today is the day you Leap into Living Forward and have a Do-Over. Because The World Needs Your Hustle and you need to End Financial Stress Now, maybe by Start-ing a Side Hustle with some Guerrilla Marketing? And, maybe along the way of Building (Your) Yellow Brick Road, you’ll learn some life lessons.
See what I did there?
Now, in all honesty, I didn’t have the thought to write a paragraph of book titles until AFTER I took the picture. Otherwise, the books would be stacked in order. But I digress –
If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know that I love stories. In fact, when I speak, I share stories with lessons. That’s how it came about to write my book. Each chapter is a story and there is a life lesson (or two) at the end of each chapter. I didn’t write it to be a personal development book, but many people have told me that’s how they read it.
Stories are just experiences, you know? But, when they are shared, they help people. We can all learn from each other’s stories. For me, most of my inspiration, encouragement, and motivation comes from story.
And that’s one reason why I have so many books –
These books for example – I’ve heard Tess Vigeland and Jon Acuff speak and to read their books after that was even more inspiring. They both tell similar stories of taking HUGE risks to settle into their true purpose. The subtitle of Tess’ book is “Leaving a job with no Plan B to Find a Career and Life you Really Want.”
DISCLAIMER: I do not recommend quitting your job today with NO plan B. Sure, I’ve done that before and I know other people who have done it but…I still don’t recommend it. Yes, things worked out for me and for Tess and for the others who have done that but I like to err on the side of caution now. ALWAYS have a Plan B.
I’ve gotten to know Kevin Buchanan through a Facebook group – the subtitle of his book is “make your goals and dreams matter”. It’s true, you know – YOUR goals and dreams DO matter. Because they are YOURS. Your goals and dreams are a part of your purpose, given to you by God to fulfill.
I’ve met Emily Birken through another Facebook group. Most of us in that group are in the world of personal finance and helping people navigate that. Did you know that “financial stress” is something that doesn’t HAVE TO exist in your life? It’s true. I’m living proof of that and Emily wrote a book about it!
Chris’ book, Side Hustle, is about finding something you love to do and turning it into a way to make extra money – a side hustle. Many people end up turning a side hustle into a full-time business. You CAN do what you LOVE to do and make money!
Micheal Hyatt’s book is a guide to LIVING the life you want. The subtitle starts with “stop drifting…”
And that’s the point, right? Many of us lost focus over the last few months and found ourselves drifting along on the sea of uncertainty and fear.
I’m going to declare that TODAY is the day we row to shore, tie our boats to the dock and stand firm, on solid ground with a clear sense of what to do next. Today is the day we stop drifting.
All of these authors- me included – have ONE thing in common – they are LIVING in their purpose and have the stories to prove it. To show how they got there.
As I’m writing, another great book comes to mind: Rudy.
Yes, as in the movie Rudy – one of the greatest football movies of all time.
Did you know that there is a paragraph in that book that ultimately led me to start my business? I tell the whole story in my book but I’ll share the last sentences of that paragraph here:
“Open their eyes to the possibilities in their own lives. You never know whose life you’ll change.” Rudy
Remember how much I love a good story? They are all there –
That’s nine books altogether – there’s 26 weeks left in 2020. That’s reading one book about every three weeks. If you read ONE personal development book about every 3 weeks until the end of 2020, your life would change.
(By the way, most of these authors have podcasts and/or post on social media too)
I firmly believe that we take the steps to change our lives, we create a ripple effect to encourage, inspire, and motivate other people to change their lives.
It’s up to us to show others what is possible –
Today is the first day of the last six months of the year. I know that the last three months or so have been difficult. It’s been difficult for me, too.
I don’t talk about it too much because I like to keep things positive and encouraging but I’ve experienced a lot of what you’ve experienced – loss of income, unexpected homeschool, fear, uncertainly, anxiety. We have all dealt with this COVID crisis differently and in the best way, we know-how.
But, it’s also been a much-needed break, per se. Shelter-in-place sort of forced all of us to really evaluate what we were missing or not missing.
It forced us to re-evaluate our priorities.
And now it’s GO TIME.
It’s time to stop thinking and start DOING.
It’s time to put plans into ACTION.
Today is our day. We will spend the next three months (3rd quarter of the year ) trying out our action plans and evaluating what works and what doesn’t work. We will refine our process and practice it. Then, we will spend the last three months of the year putting that plan into action and build momentum going into 2021.
We will NOT waste the last six months of the year because COVID totally upending out lives. 2020 isn’t over! We have LIFE to live, dreams to pursue, and others to motivate and inspire along the way – you ready?
oh wait…I know what you are thinking –
Go where? Go, How? Go, and do what?
And you know what, that’s ok. Maybe you haven’t spent the last few weeks or days preparing to start over today. Maybe, you didn’t think about starting over until you read this post and went, huh – that’s a good idea!
I’m here to help. You know I wasn’t just going to tell you to GO without giving you some direction, right?
1. Declare that today is Day 1.
You know, “today is the first day of the rest of your life” kind of thing. Declare it and mean it.
2. BELIEVE that, if you do the work, things will change. I promise you they will – but, you have to do the work. Change doesn’t just magically happen.
3. Pray – maybe that should have been step 1, but I’ll put it here because after you declare and believe, you need to pray. Whatever your next step is, you might need some Divine guidance or intervention.
4. Tell someone. This is the hardest step but I’ll make it easy for you.
See Step 5.
5. Talk to me. Schedule your FREE 15-minute phone conversation. Tell me your goals and your plans and I’ll see what I can do to help you get started. I’ll ask you some questions and we’ll see about your idea and your plans. Sometimes, your next right step is coaching. Sometimes, it’s not. This phone call will help YOU determine that. I’d love to hear what you want to do over the next six months!
Ok, now you are ready –
IT’S GO TIME!
